Les Inventions for 5 viols

These five Inventions for an ensemble of five viols - instruments deeply attached to the French aesthetics of the 17th and 18th centuries - contribute to bringing them into our present-day world by broadening the instrumental possibilities, either through the use of current instrumental techniques (an extension of the oldest), or by borrowing the technique of the sarangi (a fiddle from India, Nepal or Pakistan). The result is a new ensemble sound and an expressiveness with which this intimate instrument is less familiar.

The five linked parts are very contrasted and the multiplicity of playing modes and timbres contribute to a form in constant movement and renewal.
